Outdoor Etiquette | Geocaching Kids

Nature's Best Friend

Geocaching is like a giant treasure hunt, but the real treasure is the beautiful nature around us! Learning how to be a respectful explorer keeps the trails happy.

Leave No Trace Principles

Simple ways to keep nature exactly how you found it.

Plan Ahead

Check the weather and bring a map so you don't get lost.

Stay on Trails

Walking on paths protects tiny plants and animal homes.

Pack Out Trash

If you bring it in, make sure you take it back home.

Leave What You Find

Rocks and flowers belong in nature for everyone to see.

Respect Wildlife

Watch animals from a distance and never feed them.

Be Kind to Others

Share the trail and keep your voice quiet.

Your Explorer Checklist

💧 Safe Water Bottle: Stay hydrated! Bring a full bottle.
♻️ Small Trash Bag: Pick up any litter you see along the way.
🧤 Gloves for Safety: Wear these when reaching under logs.
🧸 Swag for Trading: Bring a small toy to leave behind.
🤝 The "Buddy" System: Always go with an adult.

How to Handle a Cache

1
Find it Carefully: Look with your eyes first! Try not to disturb plants.
2
Sign & Trade: Sign the log. If you take a toy, leave one too!
3
Seal it Tight: Close the box so rain and bugs stay out.
4
Rehide Exactly: Put it back in the same spot and cover it up.
5
Report Issues: If it's wet or broken, tell an adult to log a note.

Trail Manners

Meeting Others

Give a friendly wave! Step to the side on narrow trails to let others pass.

Private Property

Never cross fences. Stay in public areas where explorers are welcome.

Being a Ninja

Wait for "Muggles" (non-geocachers) to pass before grabbing the cache.

Help the Environment

Turn your geocaching trip into an eco-mission!

CITO Mission
Pick up 3 pieces of litter near every cache.
Nature Journal
Draw one cool bug or leaf you saw.
Photo Hunter
Take a photo instead of picking a flower.
